Mariam Nanyonga and Harzard Lukomwa have, respectively, won the women’s and men’s Shooters Pool Championship hosted at Club Klein in Nyendo, Masaka.
The two-day tournament attracted the country’s best pool players competing for a Shs3million kitty for the best male and Shs1.5million for the woman pool champion.
Club Klein was filled to the rafters as the country’s crème dela crème pool players tried to outdo each other.
The tournament, which is ranked only below the national open in terms of cash prizes, is jointly sponsored by leading pharmaceutical C.K.I and Club Klein.
After two days of intense action, drama and a few surprises, Lukia Naiga and Mariam Nanyonga lined up to contest in the Best of 11 Ladies final.
Naiga started brilliantly and in fact took a commanding 5-2 lead but watched helplessly as Nanyonga rallied from behind to take the tie 6-5 in a game that kept many on tenterhooks.
In the men’s final, frontrunner Lukomwa survived a mini scare against Dan Mubiru during the ninth frame but gained composure to pot black in the tenth thus winning the Best of 13 match-up by 7-3 to claim the top the crown.
The first-runner-up in the men’s competition, in this case Mubiru, returned home with Shs1.5million while the women’s number two bagged Shs750,000.
Players that finished fifth to eighth in both categories also won different cash prizes.
