The government of Uganda has received 5.9 metric tons of rice from the Chinese government as relief for people in hunger-stricken areas around the country.

The Chinese Ambassador Zheng Zhuqang handed over the rice worth Shs22billion to the Prime Minister Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda and Disaster Preparedness Minister, Hilary Onek at Serena hotel in Kampala today.

Mr Zheng said that the Chinese government is concerned about the poor harvest caused by bad weather in many African countries including Uganda since last year.

The Ambassador added that the donation is in partial fulfillment of the $1billion emergency food aid promised by Chinese president in 2015 to African countries hit by food crisis.

Prime Minister Rugunda thanked the Chinese government for the donation saying it will help address the food crisis in parts of the country.
