As Uganda prepares to join the world in celebrating the International Women’s Day on Wednesday March 8, prison authorities have revealed that the women behind bars will not be left out of the celebrations.
The Prison Services spokesperson Mr Frank Baine has told UBC Radio that prison commanders have been tasked to prepare special meals for female inmates on the women’s big day.
Baine says that on this day of food and festivities, female inmates will come together to celebrate their womanhood and look to their future just like the rest of the women “walking out there free.”
Prisons Authority say the number of women in Prison stands at 2,390.
Of the 2,390 female inmates, 1,165 have been convicted, 741 are on remands while 484 are debtors.
The number of male inmates is still far higher though, standing at 49,165, according to Baine.
