The Speaker of Parliament the Right Honourable Rebecca Kadaga has told world legislators that the international community has fallen short of its commitment to ensuring dignity and equal rights for both men and women.
She also noted that the gap between the rich and the poor has continued to widen with primitive accumulation of wealth by few individuals being a permanent feature in most economies.
The Speaker was speaking to more than 650 MPs from 132 countries during the 136th Inter Parliamentary Union Assembly in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
She added that the world has shortchanged the poor, the old and youth who must be availed clear opportunities to better their lives.
She cited corruption, impunity and failure to reign in the corrupt as the most obnoxious drivers of inequality.
Other members of Uganda’s delegation to the meeting include MPs Latif Ssebaggala, Raphael Magyezi, Maureen Osoru, Julie Mukoda Zabwe and Francis Mwijukye.
