The National Resistance Movement (NRM) party candidate Hajjati Rehema Watongola has been declared winner of the Kamuli municipality MP by-election.

Watongola garnered 8,726 votes followed by her closest rival Salaam Musumba with 5,778votes.

The Court nullified the initial election of Watongola on grounds of lack of adequate qualification – a complaint lodged by Musumba – and it ordered for fresh elections in the constituency.

But in the turn of events, Watongola was cleared by the Uganda National Examination Board (UNEB) and the NRM legal team to contest in the by-elections.

As it was the case in the first round, again Watongola beat Musumba to the MP seat.

The other three contestants in the race included Proscovia Naikoba Kanakutanda, Samuel Walugyo and Mike Kiboome, all independents.

Watongola has been declared winner by Kamuli district Returning Officer Gracious Aryagi at Kamuli Youth Center.
