PM Rugunda Lauds MPs on Nutrition Drive

The Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda has saluted Members of Parliament for promoting nutrition and food security in the country.

He was closing a nutrition orientation retreat for Members of the 10th Parliament at Protea hotel in Entebbe.

The Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda also said that nutrition is the foundation of development of a human being, and the single most important factor in life.

Dr Rugunda added that the aspirations of our national vision can only be realised with a healthy and productive population.

Dr Rugunda further said that despite the high potential to produce adequate food per capita, Uganda is still ranked among the countries that are highly burdened by hunger and malnutrition.

He said that the National Development Plan includes a high level target of reducing child stunting levels in the country, adding that malnutrition has dire consequences for outcomes from key Government policies like education, and health for all.

The Premier said that the Uganda Nutrition action plan has been extended till the end of 2017 to allow the finalisation of the national nutrition policy which is being developed.

The Chairman of the Steering Committee, Uganda Parliamentary Forum on Nutrition, Innocent Pentagon Kamusiime said that the forum aims at providing a rallying point for Parliament to be an advocate and champion for prioritisation of food and nutrition security in the national development agenda.

He said nutrition is an important means to development and has high returns on investment.

The Cost of hunger study of 2013, revealed that up to 5.6% of GDP is lost due to child under-nutrition.
