Vanilla growing to be regulated

Government is drafting regulations to govern vanilla production and marketing in the country.

Christopher Kibanzanga, the Agriculture State Minister, says the regulation is a response to various complaints from people involved in vanilla trade.

He also said they will soon discuss requests from farmers to include vanilla growing under the Operation Wealth Creation.

The minister’s revelation comes at the time when Kasese district council is in advanced stages of passing an ordinance to regulate the growing, management and vanilla marketing.

The Kasese District Vanilla Management Ordinance, which is at the third reading, seeks to introduce stringent measures to control middlemen who have been at the center of confusing the market.

Information from the Agriculture Ministry shows that a Kilogram of Grade A vanilla costs between Shs180,000 and Shs200,000 while grade B costs Shs80,000 and Grade C costs Shs50,000 per kilo.
