Sanitary Pads-talk Dominates Education Officials Meet with MPs

By UBC Reporter

The Education and Sports Minister Ms Janet Museveni has expressed reservations about NGOs distributing sanitary pads to school children without directly involving the ministry.

She was responding to suggestions by the Education Committee on the need for the Education Ministry to regulate the distribution of sanitary pads to school children.

The Committee chaired by Mbale Woman MP Connie Nakayenze Galiwango said it was improper for such NGOs to deal directly with schools without involving the ministry.

Members also wanted to know why provision of free sanitary pads to girls is unfunded in the 2017/2018 financial year budget.

The minister and First Lady Janet Museveni explained that many areas in the Education sector remain unfunded because of budgetary constraints.

President Yoweri Museveni had during his 2016 re-election campaigns pledged to provide free sanitary pads to school girls as one way of boosting girl-child education.
